What is Plasma Gasification?

Many of you might have heard about plasma gasification in the context of waste to energy.

What indeed is plasma gasification?

Plasma gasification is the use of plasma to convert waste, typically solid waste from households and industries, into an organic mixture of gases called the syngas,

A plasma is generated using a plasma torch. Such a plasma enables temperatures to reach to about 7000 deg in the gasifier. At this high temperature (the same as the temperature at the surface of the sun), pretty much everything is vapourised. Organic components are vaporised to form syngas while inorganics are converted into ash that can be disposed.

Use of plasma gasifier solves the problem of segregation as the high temperature pretty much takes care of this by gasifying all the organics and ashifying all the inorganics, thus eliminating the need for segregation of waste.
